1938 In London: The next 10 years were spent in Berlin, where many of his works were composed and performed. From 1932 to 1934, Rat-haus lived in Paris, and from then until 1938 in London. He went to the United States in 1938, joined the faculty of Queens College in 1940, and was professor of composition there until his death. In 1953 he was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera to revise the orchestration of Boris Godunov. His works include an opera (Fremde Erde, 1930), ballets, incidental music for plays, film music, compositions for orchestra and for chorus, chamber music, and songs and piano pieces.RATHENAU, ra'te-nou, Walther, German industrialist and statesman: b. Harrison was born in Germantown, Pa., on Jan. 13, 1870. After studying at Johns Hopkins University and in Europe, he taught at several colleges. He was on the faculty of Yale University (1907-1938) and chairman of the National Research Council (1938-1946). He died in New Haven on Sept. 30, 1959.
An ancient and formerly walled city, Hanyang contains a large arsenal and from 1891 to 1938 was a major Chinese producer of iron and steel. The metallurgical complex, which was evacuated in 1938 when Japanese troops advanced on the city, has since been replaced by modern Textile works.
