And Photographs: What sort of photographs were these prints, which caused so much commotion? Just plain, straightforward itographs. But such photographs! Different from the photographs usually seen at the exhibitions? Yes. How different? There's the rub. If you could see them for yourself, you would at once appreciate their difference.

These books were folkloristic studies, of which the photographs were an integral part. Each picture had been made on the spot, often with great difficulty, always with direct honesty. Free from sentimentality and photographs artificiality, they were diametrically opposed to the art-photographs of Robinson and photographs his followers.
