Early History: HAGIOGRAPHY, hag-e-og'ra-fe, is generally defined as a segment of Christian church history concerned with the lives and veneration of the saints. Lives of the saints generally reflect the concept of history current at the time they were written. In addition to furnishing biographical data they often aim at glorifying the saint and edifying the reader.

Chinese and Japanese works of history and vers the history of the Shogunate from its igin in the 12th century down to the setting
of the Tokugawa dynasty in the early history 17th century. A second work, Nihon Seihi, in 16 volumes, also written in Chinese, was published in 1837, after Rai Sanyo's death.
Historical Societies.-The Virginia Historical Society (Richmond), established in 1831, publishes the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography and historical monographs and manuscripts. The Virginia State Library (Richmond), which acts as the state archives, publishes state documents, a number of historical guides, and the quarterly Virginia Cavalcade. The Institute of early history American History and Culture (Wil-liamsburg) publishes the William and Mary Quarterly and books about early history America. County historical societies, patriotic organizations, and ancestral organizations publish historical records and preserve historic shrines.
