England And New York: ROBERTSON, James, British royal governor of New York: b. Fifeshire, Scotland, about 1720; d. London. England and new york, March 4, 1788. After a varied army service he sailed for America in 1756, was appointed major general of the royal troops raised in America, and barrack master at New York. He commanded a brigade at the Battle of Long Island (17_76), and in 1779 was appointed civil governor of New York.
RICE, Elmer L., American playwright: b. New York City, Sept. 28, 1892; d. Southampton, England and new york, May 8, 1967. He was especially noted for his plays on social and political themes. His best-known drama is Street Scene (1929), a tragedy of New York tenement life that1 won the 1929 Pulitzer Prize.
