Exhibits Of Fine Art: The State Library, with a collection of more than 100,000 volumes, is located in Raleigh, and the city has its own public library system. Two separate museums contain exhibits of the state's history and its natural history and resources. At the North Carolina State Art Society Galleries both permanent and temporary exhibits of fine art are on display.
The promotion of concerts and.plays is carried on by the Raleigh Civic Music Association and the Raleigh Little Theatre. The latter has a large amphitheater that is used for outdoor concerts, community "sings," vesper services, and plays, and an indoor theater with a seating capacity of 300 in which plays are regularly produced during the winter season.

Design exhibits including residential work of New England architects and interior designers, a national student/young designer housing competition and 50 years of featured residential projects from Architectural Record's Record Houses were also on display.

The Summer Salon of the Royal Institute Galleries, at 195 Piccadilly, shows hundreds of contemporary paintings that are for sale, at prices ranging from 4 or 5 pounds to 50. Here, too, one may dawdle for hours of en-trancement. A great many of the paintings are portraits that capture and hold your eye.
Foyle's Bookstore, a famous landmark on Charing Cross Road-it is called the largest bookstore in the world-often rents the upper Floor of one of its buildings for private exhibits. I studied two such exhibits for half an hour and thought them awful, because they were awful, and I won't take back a word of it.
