Face Textures: Timber, brick, gravel and water have been combined to make this Japanese-style garden. The overall design consists of a series of regular geometric shapes in varying colors and textures. Water is used in three ways to produce different textures: there is still water, rippling water and spouting water. Plants are kept to a minimum.
Again, pieces in a range of textures have been deliberately chosen for maximum style mileage. Mugs with a silvery lustre sit on a soft, muted linen Table runner. Shiny glass candle holders stand next to a matt black dish with hard, knotty rattan balls arranged in it. The silky richness of the leather console is enlivened by the shiny Vase and plate and the lacquer box. This play between textures and surface texturess takes a muted scheme from subtle to sensational.
The most prolific, and at times the m sensitive photographic critic of the day, Sadakichi rfc mann, noted that "the pictorial army is divided in w: camps," one favoring "painter-like subjects and trez ment" and the other, in which Stieglitz was numbere; made up of those "who flock around the standards of tra photographic themes and textures" He went on to observe that "the camp of the former ... becomes morem: more deserted, the old flag hangs limp and the fires he low.. . ,"52 But just what were the "photographic them: and textures" Hartmann emphasized with italics?
