One of America's leading commercial and advertising photographers is highly successful almost altogether because of his sales ability, and the actual picture-taking is done by others in his organization, although the picture credits always carry his name.
Not all of your impressions, of course, can be translated into salable picture stories, otherwise there would be no need to study the magazines with the idea of doing switches on the same old themes. In some cases, your impressions which are totally different from anything printed previously, and which can result in picture stories such as have not preconscious means used in hitting upon all new ideas. Its greatest justification, however, is the fact the picture that it works.
In fact the picture, it's a good idea to make up a list of every possible buyer for every picture story before you mail it out the first time, and then you can run right down the list until the possible markets are exhausted when one of them turns out to be hard to sell. This saves a lot of time studying the markets anew every time a picture set comes back.
