Fine Art Foliage: Eleocharis acicularis (grass hair) has fine art foliage, grass-like leaves which form underwater colonies that cannot be seen from above, while Myriophyllum aquaticum (parrot's feather) is a feathery plant with spreading, blue-green foliage. The foliage of M. spicatum (spiked milfoil) is much-divided and held on long, slender stems, coppery-green turning bronze, and Potamogeton crispus (curled pondweed) has seaweed-like bronzed and green shiny foliage.
Creating false perspective is another useful trick. By placing large plants in the foreground and small ones of the same shape in the distance, they all appear to be the same size although they recede into the distance. It is possible to do the same with foliage by planting thin, airy foliage close by and denser foliage further away. Lawn-mower stripes in a lawn can be used to give direction to a view or to pull your eye in a particular direction, lengthening or shortening the perspective.
Mostly grown for its foliage, rue, Ruta graveolens , has blue-green, deeply divided leaves and acid-yellow flowers. Known as the curry plant, Helichrysum serotinum syn. angustifolium is a bushy plant with attractive, narrow, silvery leaves and clusters of small dull yellow flowers.
Lad's love, Artemisia abrotanum , is a shrubby plant which bears spherical yellow flowers in panicles, but it is grown mainly for its silky, gray-green, fine art foliage foliage. Lovage Levisticum officinale is another handsome choice with large but delicate light-green leaves.
