gram MAR, gram MAR, Hans Christian Joachim (1853-1938), Danish bacteriologist, who developed a method of staining bacteria for microscopic study. gram MAR was born in Copenhagen on Sept. 13, 1853. He passed the University of Copenhagen final medical examinations in 1878 and in 1883 received his doctorate. He then continued his studies in Germany.
