Most army titles are Italian in origin, the French having gleaned the basic military terminology when in Italy in the 15th century and passed it on to the rest of the world. Corporal is derived from the Italian capo di squadra (squad leader) ; sergeant and captain stem, respectively, from the Latin servire (to serve) and capitancus (chief). Colonel probably stems from the Italian colonna, meaning a "column (of troops)," while major, meaning "greater," is derived from sergeant major, which originally designated a unit's second in command. Sergeant major is now the title of a unit's senior enlisted man.
