Masters In Paris And Rome: Gounod won a Prix de Borne in 1839, and in Borne he made his chief subject of study the old masters of ecclesiastical music, especially Palestrina. His friendship with Mendelssohn in Rome had a marked effect on Gounod's musical ideals. Gounod wrote several Masses that were performed in Vienna in 1842-1843 while he was there on his return journey to Paris.

life. Jacques Francois Fromental filie Levy was horn in Paris on May 27, 1799. Admitted to the Paris Conservatory at the age of 10, he studied with Henri Berton and Cherubim. After winning the Grand Prix de Rome in 1819, for his cantata lierminie, he went to Rome, where he beean to write opera. However, his first success was in Paris with the opera Clari (1828).
ROGERS, John, American sculptor: b. Salem, Mass., 30 Oct. 1829; d. New Canaan, Conn., July 1904. In early life he developed a talent in clay modeling; and in 1858 went to Europe where he studied under the best masters in Paris and Rome. He returned to the United States in 1859, and modeled a large number of statuettes, of which his first group, 'The Checker Players,' attracted popular attention. Many of these "Rogers Groups" pertained to the Civil War and elicited general popular approval rather than the unstinted admiration of die art critic. He also executed the equestrian statue of General Reynolds, now at the city hall in Philadelphia.
