Mayor Of London Drives: 2. Folk Pageantry You don't have to wait for the next coronation to see British pageantry. It goes on all the time. In a sense, the traditional wigs of the judges, the top hats of the City messengers, the startling operetta splendor of the doorman at the Bank of England, are all parts of the durable fabric of pageantry. But there are annual events capable of more specific mention.
The Queen's birthday, "officially" early in June-Elizabeth was actually born on April 21-is an occasion for lavish military pageantry, with the Trooping of the Color Ceremony and the Horse Guards Parade.
The Lord Mayor's Show, November 9, is a "City" event of great pomp. The newly elected Lord Mayor of London drives in state from the Guildhall to the Law Courts, with escorts of pikemen, City guilds and-here's your chance for something special-the Livery Companies.
Cincinnati is governed by a 9-member city council elected every two years. The council elects one of its own members as mayor, another as vice mayor, and a third as president pro tempore to preside over the council in the absence of the mayor and vice mayor. It also appoints a city manager. The council enacts the laws for the city, but the city manager administers them. He has a seat in the council but cannot vote on matters coming before it. There are six major departments in the city administration-the departments of public works, public utilities, finance, urban development, safety, and law.
Government.-The city government is of the mayor-council type, with the mayor directly elected by the people and eight councilmen elected by their wards. By common, unwritten consent, the mayor and half of the councilmen are of Spanish-American background. The city not only owns and operates the airport, but also the sewage treatment plant of the city.
