Modern Art Uring: Tie the level to the top of the platform with a string fastened to a couple of nails driven on opposite sides into its edges or loop a stout rubber band around level and platform. Have an assistant hold the measuring rod vertically with its end touching the top of one grade stake. Place the bottom end of the stake attached to the platform on top of another grade stake. Hold the platform stake vertically and look through the eyepiece of the level toward the measuring stake. Move the stake you are holding until the bubble you see centers exactly on the center line of the scale that is visible at the same time. The point on the measur-ing rod held by the assistant that coincides with the center line of the scale you see is then level with it. By reading the height of that point on the measuring rod the difference in levels, if any, between the tops of the two grade stakes is apparent.
Birth and Growth.-Young whales are usually born one at a time after a period of gestation of about a year in large whales and somewhat less in smaller species. The young are large compared with the size of the mother. A calf measuring 25 feet may be produced by a female blue whale 80 feet long. Within a year, the young male may more than double its length, and it may be 80 feet long at three years. Rapid as this rate of growth seems, it is actually quite slow compared with that of many terrestrial mammals. A pig, for example, grows about five times as rapidly.
The final consonants -b, -d, -g, and -r were dropped, and final semivowels appeared, to form diphthongs with the main vowel. The number of tones increased to four. In the majority of the modern art uring Chinese dialects there are usually only two grades of consonants (p and p') and, as we have noted, three consonant endings (-n, -ng, and a modern art uring -r). The four tones of modern art uring Chinese differ from "those of ancient Chinese in that the old first tone has been subdivided into the modern art uring first and second tones and the old fourth-tone words have been distributed among the other modern art uring tones.
