Mother A Picture Of Her: It's a good trick in selling the second to have a waste basket at hand, and then if the mother hesitates about buying another print, the salesgirl who, has taken it from the files should throw it away immediately, while the mother is watching, and explain with a smile that it's impossible to keep any rejected prints in the files. Seeing a picture of her loved one thrown into a waste basket for later burning has enough effect on the mother to make her change her mind and buy it.
To build your set of samples, go to the mother of the most charming child you can find, a child with an intelligent face and bright expressions, and offer to give the mother a picture of her baby without charge if she'll have her child model for you. Tell her frankly that you need the pictures for samples. She will be proud to cooperate.
Then proceed to shoot dozens of pictures of that child.
Shoot several sittings, spacing them far enough apart for you to see the final results of each sitting before you shoot another, and shoot ten times as many negatives as you would in an ordinary sitting.
The idea, you see, is to assemble a set of pictures of this one child which will bring agonies of envy to every other mother who sees this masterpiece set.
One trick which helps in posing a very small infant is to put the baby on the seat of a straight-backed chair and then drape a blanket around the baby up to his middle. The mother puts her hand under the blanket, where it will be concealed, and supports the infant while you take the picture. If she kneels on the Floor beside the chair she will not show at all in the picture. Parents often like such a pose because the child looks stronger and more developed for his age than he really is.
