Teamwork paid off during the next few days of operations, when all efforts were directed toward excavation of "Thompson's bank." The finds there were richer than expected. Many skulls and other human remains were dug from the mud along with copper and gold bells, delicately carved flint projectile points, incense (called pom in Maya), jade beads, and ceramic fragments. Rich as the finds were, however, they were only Thompson's leftovers, an encouraging sampling of what remained at the bottom of the well itself.
