Museum Pension: The GAR was generally satisfied with the Disability Pension Act of 1890 and jealously watched its implementation by successive pension commissioners. Its other interests in the days of its strength included the institution and appropriate observance of Memorial Day, agitation for the establishment and generous maintenance of old soldiers' homes, the inculcation of patriotism, particularly among schoolchildren, and the censoring of school books that failed to present an orthodox view of the Civil War.
In 1661 the aged Hals was exempted by the Guild of St. Luke from the payment of annual dues, and in the following year the burgomasters of the city granted him a yearly pension. In 1664 he received the important commission to paint group portraits of the governors and lady governors of the Old Men's Alms House (both in the Frans Hals museum Pension, Haarlem), further indication that his position in the community had not been ruined by a dissolute life. Hals died in Haarlem on Aug. 29, 1666.
Throughout Switzerland, lower rates are quoted in hotels of all categories for en pension (full board) guests who remain three days or longer, this being especially natural and prevalent in so resorty a land as this; and low demi-pension (partial board) terms may also be had, permitting the guest to go where he likes for one of his daily meals.
If your budget suggests very thrifty touring and lodging you will find it easy to comply in Switzerland, for since Swiss cleanliness is axiomatic it follows that you need not hesitate to lodge in places of the very lowest category-and prices.
