Paris Peace: Peace Centre in Oslo by David Adjaye
Norwegians have gone one step further than Nobel's prize for peace and opened what could become a pacifist pilgrimage site for the world: the Nobel Peace Center.
Even bandying the word "peace" around sounds a little like quaint flower-power idealism these days, but translating it into solid form is even more of a stretch.
Can a building create peace?
Boutros Boutros Ghali (UN Sec.-Gen. 1992-96, Egyptian) issued 'An Agenda for Peace' on preventive diplomacy, peace-making, peace-keeping and peace-building (1992) and presided over the UN's adoption of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (1996).
Dag Hammarskjold (UN Sec.-Gen.
1953-61, Swedish), who described himself as 'curator of the secrets of 82 nations', won the Nobel Peace Prize (1961) after dying in an air crash while negotiating over the Congo crisis (1961).
The Peace Treaties: Five separate peace treaties, known collectively as the Peace of paris Peace, were signed with the Central Powers (Germany and its allies). The Treaty of Versailles particularly penalized Germany, which lost one seventh of its land and all of its overseas territories. It was also made to pay huge sums of money as reparations. In practice Germany was so crippled by the war that it never paid the huge sums demanded.
Tie first Russian Revolution of 1917 is ailed the February Revolution although it appened in March, and the revolution in lovember 1917 is called the October devolution because the Russians adopted le Gregorian calendar much later than le rest of Europe. By 1917, the Russian alendar was 13 days behind that of the sst of the world; the new regime brought : into line, but the old names for the prisings still persisted.
