Perfect Picture: With an apparatus made from an old sewing machine, and a candle for standard illumination, they exposed plates to successively increasing amounts of light. The silver deposit, or density, produced upon subsequent development they measured optically with a homemade photometer. From this data they were able to calculate the "speed" of an emulsion (that is, its sensitivity to light).
In May 1890, Hurter and Driffeld announced their researches in the Journal of the Society of Chemical Industry. They opened their report with a statement that hi become classic:
The production of a perfect picture by means of photography is an art; the production of a technically perfect negative is a science.
The very things which an artist would leave out, or render imperfectly, the photograph takes infinite care with, and so renders its illusions perfect. What is the picture of a drum without the marks on its head where the beating of the sticks has darkened the parchment?
The idea of waiting until you have printed the picture before your interview is that it gives you a perfect opportunity to sell prints to the store manager. He is much more likely to buy prints after he has seen the quality of your photography than he is to order if you bring up the subject in advance.
