It is a Permanent Exhibition of Danish Arts and Crafts, yet every item is price-tagged and for sale. It is a joint project of many high grade merchants and I know of nothing quite like it in other capitals. Among the big department stores attractive to browsers, are Magasin du Nora, usually shortened to plain Magasin; Ilium; Fonnesbech; Crome and Gold-schmidt. An interesting city tour for prospective shoppers, or mere gazers, is the daily Industrial Arts Tour by coach, with English-speaking guide. It takes in Jensen's, a department store or two, the important Museum of Applied Arts, on Bredgade, and, in conclusion, Den Permanente.
St. Thomas was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493, but not colonized until 1657, when a short-lived Dutch community settled here. A Danish colony of 1666 was also ephemeral, but in 1672 the Danes made a permanent settlement at St. Thomas Harbor. After a period of company control, the island was returned to the Danish crown in 1755, by which time Denmark had also acquired the other islands in the group. After arrangements for their purchase by the United States in 1870 and 1902 had failed, the sale was finally consummated in 1917. Pop. (1960) 16,201.
