Picture -making: Other color processes are being developed which will open up new profit possibilities in virtually every one of the picture -Making specialties covered in this book. One which is comparatively new and hardly exploited at all is the Flexichrome process, which makes it possible to produce a good color print from a black and white negative. In this process the colors are applied by hand but the final result bears no resemblance to the ordinary tinted picture -Making. Rather the picture -Making looks like a good color lithograph. Anyone who becomes an expert at making good Flexichrome prints probably could count on a number of years during which he would have little competition.
Its very incompleteness gives the picture -Making an intimate quality: only the head and the hands of the little boy have beer finished, the costume looks unreal, as though it had been made for a tailor's dummy, the chair and the background remain sketchy. At the same time, however, the intimacy of the picture -Making is undermined by its format, thus making the boy look larger than life. So, even in this painting, we find that peculiar mixture of the intimate and the monumental which is so typical of this time.
The woman recovered damages. Without the picture -Making, she might not have done so. In this case, the photographer's appearance in court was short and easy. He had only to testify as to the time and date of his shooting the picture -Making. Sometimes, however, court appearances can be long and disagreeable. Attorneys will go to great lengths to discredit the photographer, as if thereby they could discredit the evidence given by the picture. Through long practice, they become extremely adept at making the witness suffer.
