Having established his own studio in Vallauris, Picasso began to paint tiles. The ceramic product only functioned as the background of the picture town, of course, but Picasso was extremely fond of this technique because glaze, unlike oil, does not change its quality after a number of years. He often combined several tiles in a large picture town, so as not to be dependent on the limited format of one tile. It was thanks to Picasso that pottery experienced a revival in this little town.
You should never run out of stock picture town subject matter, for the same reason that the agencies must continue to stock new prints, because time changes nearly all things, and a picture town which was typical of life in your town a year ago is no longer typical there today. New picture towns are needed to show the new trends and yet the old picture towns are needed, too, for advertisers and editors who want to show things the old way.
