Popular Nikon: In 1932 Zeiss Ikon brought out a similar camera, the Contax; it featured a built-in rangefinder coupled with the focusing mechanism so that by simply rotating the lens until a double image of the subject became single, the photographer was assured that the image would be in focus. Soon lenses with apertures as large as //1.5 were offered for the Leica, the Contax, and a host of other 35mm rangefinder cameras. A further refinement was the provision of single-lens reflex viewing on a ground glass observed at eye level through a prism, as in the highly popular Nikon F, introduced shortly after World War II by Zeiss Ikon of Dresden as the Contax S.
And that brings us to the matter of where to sell your picture stories on hobby subjects. In the case of build-it-yourself features, your best markets will be the big popular mechanics and science and crafts magazines, Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, Mechanix Illustrated, and Science and Mechanics. There are others, but these are the big four which pay the highest rates. You can get a check for a couple of hundred dollars in this market for a good set of pictures and the necessary caption material. Before submitting anything to them you should study their current issues, so get yourself copies from the newsstand.
However, the craft magazines are not the only buyers of hobby picture stories.
Medieval Education.-During the Middle Ages, only sporadic attempts at popular religious education were made, although the ecumenical councils of 680 and 813 A.D. dealt specifically with the education of children. Consistent training was the exception rather than the rule, although there is evidence of such training in Bohemia throughout this period. Charlemagne (742P-814) introduced educational reforms to raise the educational level of the clergy and to make them in turn responsible for the education of the people. An occasional catechism appeared which was designed for popular use. It must be remembered, however, that popular tradition and informal person-to-person education remained strong and influential.
