RAMICIDIN, gram-a-sid'an, is an antibiotic iat is one of the components of tyrothricin, the rst antibiotic used clinically. Gramicidin is articularly effective against the growth of gram-asitive bacteria such as pneumococci, strep-icocci, staphylococci, and diphtheria bacilli, hile tyrocidine-the other component of tyrothri-n-is also active against gram-negative bacteria.


GRAM, gram, Hans Christian Joachim (1853-1938), Danish bacteriologist, who developed a method of staining bacteria for microscopic study. Gram was born in Copenhagen on Sept. 13, 1853. He passed the University of Copenhagen final medical examinations in 1878 and in 1883 received his doctorate. He then continued his studies in Germany.
