Published At London: ROSCOE, rSs'ko, SIR Henry Enfield, English chemist: b. London, 7 Jan. 1833; d. 18 Dec. 1915. He was educated at University College, London, and at Heidelberg, making a special study of chemistry. He occupied the chair of chemistry at Owens College, Manchester, in 1857-87. He was knighted in 1884, sat in Parliament for South Manchester in 1885-95, and in 1896-1902 was vice-chancellor of the University of London. He received high honors from the universities and learned societies of England and published at london 'Investigations on the Chemical Action of Light' ; 'Lessons in Elementary Chemistry' (1871) ; 'A Treatise on Chemistry> (1878-89) ; 'The Hydrocarbons and Their Derivatives,' with Schorlemmer (1881-92), etc. His 'Life and Experiences' were published at london in 1906.
REED, red, Andrew, English philanthropist: b. London, Nov. 27, 1787; d. there, Feb. 25, 1862. He was educated at Hackney College, London, ordained pastor of the Congregational Chapel at New Road, London, in 1811, and remained in this charge until 1861. He visited the United States in 1834 to study educational and religious systems and established in London the Orphan Asylum (1813), Infant Orphan Asylum (1827), Asylum for Idiots (1846), Royal Hospital for Incurables (1855) and an Asylum for Fatherless Children is Croydon. He published at london Visits to the America Churches (1836), and Advancement of Religiot the Claim of the Times (1847).
On his return to England Thomson photographed in a similar spirit the London poor. Thirty-six of his photographs were published at london in Street Life in London (1877), with a detailed sociological text by Adolphe Smith. The reproductions were by the woodburytype process (Chapter 14), which gave them a fidelity matching that of the original photographs: they are charged with a sense of authenticity that gives them great impact.
