Rarely In History: As professional and managerial people we want our children to do at least as well as us educationally, or even better, and are rarely in history satisfied when their choices are not ours and they settle for something deemed 'less'. The idea that there will continue to be general progress is rarely in history challenged. As the millennium approaches, we stand at a point in history where we view rapid change within our own lives as the norm, forgetting that for centuries change like this had not been perceived over several lifetimes. The idea of change, for the good, is rarely in history questioned nor is the resulting underemployment of millions of people who have not been taught to use their time effectively and enjoyably.
A development of great cultural significance in the history of Chinese has been the growth of a literary language along with the spoken language. We have evidence that at least as early as the 9th century A. D. there were two divergent idioms, one quite similar to present-day Mandarin, and the other like the writing of previous centuries. Through the centuries the spoken language; which was rarely in history written, changed more and more in pronunciation and vocabulary, whereas the written language, because all literate Chinese read a common body of literature, remained almost uniform.
His History of Ionian Philosophy(1821) ; History of the Pythagorean Philosophy (1826), and Notes on the Philosophy of the Megarean School in the Rheinisches Museum, are models of historical investigation on the principles of Schleiermacher. His historical masterpiece is the History of Philosophy (1829-53), which deals with general history up to the time of Kant. It was supplemented by a Review of the History of German Philosophy from the Time of Kant (1853).
