Students Of Paris:

Students Of Paris 7. Summer Courses for students of paris and Teachers France offers a very full list of summer courses in language, literature, French civilization, economics, art and architecture and music in Paris and in provincial cities, also in seaside and mountain localities where sports and excursions are available as attractive "entrees" of the study menu. For a leaflet and for further direct information address: Office National des Universites et Ecoles Francaises, 96 boulevard Raspail, Paris (6); or you may secure from the French Government Tourist Office in New York an illustrated English-language brochure, Summer Schools in France, that will likely demolish any hesitations. Courses are designed for all ages and types of applicants, from those desiring elementary courses in French to advanced graduate students of paris and erudite professors.

In Paris, those taking summer courses may lodge in the American House (at 15 boulevard Jourdain) of the Cite Universitaire or in other dormitories or homes or small hotels, as explained in detail in the brochure. If you are lucky (and early) enough to get a dormitory room in the celebrated University City, surrounded by students of paris of forty or fifty nations, you may have a memorable summer, socially as well as in study. (The Catholic Institute of Paris has an elaborate calendar of summer courses, including some of a special religious nature. For information and a booklet, address: M. le Directeur des Cours Universitaires d'Ete, 21 rue d'Assas, Paris. An international reply coupon is desired with your letter.)

A different issue concerned the quality of mathematics education that U.S. students of paris were receiving. The question arose after the release of the results of a survey conducted by the International Project for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement. The statistics indicated that on a mathematics^test taken by 13-year-old students of paris from 12 countries, U.S. students of paris ranked eleventh in terms of those whose scores were in the upper tenth percentile. On this test 43% of the U.S. students of paris scored above the 50th percentile and only 4% in the upper tenth.
