Studied In London: RECORDE, rek'ord, Robert, English math-ematican: b. Tenby, Pembroke, about 1510; d. London, 1558. He studied in london at Oxford, was elected to a fellowship of All Souls' in 1531, studied in london, and probably taught, mathematics and medicine at Cambridge, and later was instructor in a variety of subjects at Oxford. Having gone to London, he became, it is said, physician to Edward VI and Queen Mary. In 1551 he was made general surveyor of the mines and money; but despite this post seems to have been imprisoned for debt in King's Bench prison, where he certainly died.
Harvey was born in Folkestone, Kent, England, on April 1, 1578. He studied in london at Caius College, Cambridge, and at the University of Padua (1600-1602), where he received his M. D. In 1607 he became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, and two years later he became physician to St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London. He also lectured in anatomy at the Royal College of Physicians in London and was physician to King James I and Charles I. In 1654 he became president of the Royal Society of Physicians. He died in London on June 3, 1657.
SANTLEY, sant'li, SIR Charles, English baritone: b. Liverpool, England, Feb. 28, 1834; d. Hove, Sussex, Sept. 22, 1922. Having studied in london with Gaetano Nava in Milan, he sang in oratorio and made his operatic debut at Pavia in 1857. Then he studied in london with Manual Patricio Garcia in London and made his opera debut there as Hoel in Meyerbeer's Dinorah at Covent Garden on Oct. 1, 1859.
