The leased areas, which revert to China in 1997, are mainly rural, and the northwestern plain is Hong Kong's only extensive farming region. Along the coast and on many of the islands are fishing villages. Places' of interest in the New Territories include 'the walled villages of Kam Tin; the fishing fleet in the quiet Toho Harbour; and the Temple of 10,000 Bud-dhas and Amah's Rock at Sha Tin.
Both population movements affected the distribution of the rural population between the infertile hills and the fertile plains. Before the war, hill villages had been overpopulated and therefore contained the most poverty-striken segment of Greek society. Most of the postwar exodus to the cities or to foreign countries took place from the hill villages where the land was marginal. The population of the plains, where the land was amenable to mechanization, remained fairly stable.
