Together Museum Directors: In some respects, the high standards set by the leaders in advertising help to make it easier for the beginner to break into the field at an unpretentious level. These high standards give everyone something to shoot at, give the art directors of the smaller agencies plenty of examples by which to judge the photography they obtain from their own suppliers. As a result, advertising art directors in the lower echelons seem habitually discontented with the pictures they are buying.
"Do you do any advertising photography?" is a question which I have been asked over and over again by ad men whom I've met socially and otherwise. And when I tell them I'm not in that field, they always seem, disappointed, even when they know little or nothing of my work.
