In 1914 he graduated at Notre Dame University with a B.S. degree and the reputation of one of the most brilliant college football players of his day, with an uncanny skill in forward passing. After graduating he became an instructor in chemistry and football coach at Notre Dame, and in 1918 was appointed head coach. From that time until his death his success in developing winning Notre Dame teams was little short of mar-velous. For 13 years, teams which he coached won 105 games, lost 12, and were tied five times.
