Vereker In London On July: GORT, gort, 6th Viscount (1886-1946), British field marshal, who commanded the British field force in France early in World War II. He was born John S_tandish Surtees Prendergast Vereker in London on July 10, 1886. He inherited his father's title in 1902. Gort joined the army in 1905 and at the start of World War I (1914) went to France with the first British troops. Serving through the war, he was wounded three times and won the Victoria Cross. He was made a major general in 1935 and in 1937 became chief of the general staff.
