Video Display: Probably the greatest advantage of the electronic device over the hand-hblock of hard ceramic material several inches in diameter and an inch or so thick mounted on the outside of the underwater hull, and is connected to the main unit with a cable. In many cases, the transducer is given an oblong, streamlined shape to reduce drag.
Information on the depth of the water is presented on a digital or video display, or is recorded on a moving paper strip. The display gives an easily read indication of the depth; the recorder provides a more permanent record.
Most electronic depth sounders with a video display can also be used for finding schools of fish or individual large fish. Indeed, many are designed and sold for this purpose, with depth-finding a secondary function.

The most sophisticated depth sounders are designed more for the serious fishing enthusiast than for actual depth measurement used in conjunction with piloting. Features include a white-line display to help separate low-lying fish from the bottom itself, the use of color in a video display to help identify types of fish, readouts of water temperature, and even the ship's position when hooked up to electronic navigation equipment.
