Wrote History Of Rhode Literature.-Outstanding among early works written by Rhode Islanders are A Key into the Language of America (1643), by Roger Williams (1603P-1683) ; and The Rights of Colonies Examined (1764), by Stephen Hopkins (Providence, 1707-1785)2, who signed the Declaration of Independence. Without an experimental farm, however, Brown was not in a position to meet growing requirements for instruction and research in agriculture, and consequently the Rhode Island General Assembly in 1892 established the Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. In keeping with subsequent growth and broadening curriculum, the institution's name was changed in 1909 to Rhode Island State College, and in 1951 to University of Rhode Island.


Edna Adelaide Brown (Providence, 1875-1944) wrote children's books, and Leonard Bacon (1887-1954) received a Pulitzer Prize for Sunderland Capture and Other Poems (1940). The Pulitzer Prize was also awarded to the novelist Oliver La Farge (1901-1963), for Laughing Boy (1929).
